Ruairi Friel

CEO, Ruairi Friel, BSc, PhD, MBA

Ruairi is the founding CEO of GlasPort Bio, prior to which Ruairi worked in the Technology Transfer Office at NUI, Galway, where he managed commercialisation of University technologies relating to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Ruairi has also held senior research positions in several European biotech companies and uses both his scientific research and business experience to lead GlasPort Bio towards commercialisation of its innovative technologies.

Ruairi received a 1st class honours undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science, Biotechnology from the National University of Ireland, Galway, a PhD in Neurovirology from the University of Glasgow, and an MBA from the University of Edinburgh.

Vincent O'Flaherty

Chairman & CSO, Prof Vincent O’Flaherty, BSc, PhD

Vincent is the Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer of GlasPort Bio and is the lead inventor of the antimicrobial technologies underpinning the company.

Vincent acts as the scientific lead for the Sustainability Pillar in the Dairy Processing Technology Centre, which works on behalf of Irish enterprises to develop the indigenous environmental technology sector. He has over 25 years of experience in the area of microbial bio film and ecology research and is an internationally recognized research leader in the field.

Over the course of his research, Vincent has published over 300 scientific communications, including 95 papers in leading international, peer-reviewed journals. He has also successfully and consistently secured research funding of €10.5 million from national and international programmes.

Vincent received his 1st class honours undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science, Microbiology, and PhD from the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Head of Manufacturing, Killian O’Briain

Killian is the head of manufacturing for GlasPort Bio. He brings his extensive experience in the development, manufacture and launch of over 20 products in the Agtech space (Mayo Healthcare). He shall provide assistance to the regulatory team in GlasPort Bio in the development of GasAbate N+.
Killian also acts as a director for GlasPort Bio.

Head of Business Development, Mr Andy Leyland

Andy is an experienced senior executive with over 25 years international experience in B2C and B2B environments in strategic management, sales, business development, multi-channel marketing, innovation and operational excellence.
He has held a range of senior roles in industry including Business Development and Operations (Lifes2good): Delivery of several multi-million euro distribution agreements in European and International markets, leading to sale of the Viviscal brand to Church and Dwight for €150m; Head of Operations (BMR): leading a 40% supply chain cost reduction; CEO (Slendertone): growing key distributor market revenues in Asian markets by over 300% in a 3-year period.
Andy shall lead all business development opportunities for GlasPort Bio.
Aoife McCarthy

Project Manager, Aoife McCarthy, BSc, PhD


Aoife acts as Project Manager at GlasPort Bio, and brings with her 15 years’ experience working in R&D, Regulatory Affairs and project management roles in both industrial and academic settings.

She brings to GlasPort Bio a strong background of advancing research to the next stage of product development and commercialisation, from her experience working as Project Manager with a Venture Capitalist company. Exploring funding opportunities and advancing the research possibilities for GlasPort Bio are Aoife’s main roles in the company.

Aoife received her 1st class honours undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science, Chemistry, and PhD from NUI Galway.

Engineering Lead, Dermot Hughes, BSc, PhD

Dermot acts as Engineering Lead for GlasPort Bio, and through his 10 years’ experience in academic and industrial research, he brings a proven track record in the scale-up and commercialisation of environmental technologies.

Dermot’s most recent previous role was as Technical Manager with NVP Energy, a low-temperature anaerobic digestion technology provider. He brings this experience to GlasPort Bio where he will be responsible for the scaled-up design and application of GlasPort Bio’s technology.

Dermot received a 1st class honours degree in Environmental Science, and PhD from NUI Galway.
